• 5.0 out of 5 stars from jeanne gillespie -- Great crime fiction! : JD Kirk (also known as Barry Hutchison) has become my go-to crime fiction author. His DCI Logan books feature intriguing plots, well-fleshed characters and enough unexpected laugh-out-loud humor to temper the suspense. North Wind is a spin-off featuring one of the Logan characters, and the author has upped his game considerably. The main character has always been flawed, but this book explores and explains some of his past, and now he is complex and interesting while still retaining all of his foul-mouthed charm. I still love DCI Logan, but now I'm a Hoonigan too, and very much looking forward to the next installment! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2021 )

And then once he "caught a case" he really got a bit crazy. Even for Robert Hoon. I am so glad that J.D. Kirk decided to give Robert Join his own series, because he is a crazy, funny, and tough old bird. I do hope that he keeps up the Jack Logan series though! I love r that one even more. This book had lots going on, twist and turns, action galore. It was intense , but there was humor. I really liked this book. I definitely recommend this book, but to understand Robert Hoon, you might want to read the Jack Logan series first. Not necessary, but it would help to know him before hand. Ok the ending though! LaVigne -- Northwind is hopefully the first of a long line of Hoon Thrillers! : I saved this book on my Kindle for an entire week as I was going on vacation with friends and family. The first night on the ship, after a few drinks and a lot of good food, I hid myself on the balcony to read Northwind. What a great decision! Hoon is an extremely interesting character, you want to give him wide berth when you meet him in the street, but still, you'd want nobody else watching your back. The plot is quick and twisty. The action is wonderfully written, something not every author can manage. I felt like I was in a few of those fights myself! If you love an ex-cop procedural, a lot of fisticuffs, a twisty believable plot and rooting for the underdog, this book is for you. I promise you won't be disappointed. He seemed like the typically portrayed ex-policeman, brash, alcoholic, and angry at the world. Then as I kept on reading the story, I started to like him. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Scrapula -- Hoon is Amazing : I am one of the people who loved this character in the DCI Jack Logan novels. So, I was happy that he got his own series of books. Hoon comes up with the best insults and combination of swear words known to man. He can convince anyone of anything and is wicked smart to boot. I rarely give a book 5 stars because 5 stars should be reserved for masterpieces like A Tale of Two Cities. But, reading this was so much fun. I can’t wait for the other books to come out. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Balzac -- Excellent start to a new series : I love JD Kirk’s Logan series, and I was looking forward to more Hoonisms in this new series. JD did not disappoint! I finished the book in one late night / early morning session. It is a fast-paced, funny, sarcastic, twisted, horrifying (due to the people Hoon is pursuing) and enjoyable read. I’m already impatiently waiting for the next book in the series. I think I’ll reread all the Logan books while I wait…. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 20, 2021 )

When asked to track down a young woman who has gone missing in London, Hoon wrestles with his conscience but already knows that he will help. And Hoon’s type of help is fairly specialised. I loved his character in the DCI Logan books and I have been waiting very impatiently for Northwind to arrive. I think it was a big gamble giving the foul mouthed fellow his own book but my goodness it has paid off. This was an absolute belter of a story. My heart rate has only just returned to normal. Yes, the language was a bit fruity in places, but this is Hoon we are talking about. I'd think we would worry if he uttered a sentence without a swear word in it! The story was riveting and I feared for Bob a few times. Yet again, as with all this authors books, I read Northwind in one sitting. I do try to stop to make them last but it's impossible as you get so caught up in the writing it's hard to leave. If you haven't read any of JD Kirks books, please do, you really are missing out. Now I have to wait until February to get the next instalment, it's going to be a long winter! Bravo again JD. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 12, 2021 )
• 3.0 out of 5 stars from Paris -- A tad OTT : I have hugely enjoyed the DCI Logan series and Bob Horn’s part in those. I like JD Kirk’s writing style, so set about this with enthusiasm. Oh dear! Hoon transforms into a cross between superman and Jack Reacher with a touch of an obscene Billy Connolly (whom I adore, for the record). Just a bit too much for me. It IS fiction, I am well aware, but I do like my detective/crime fiction to have one foot in something resembling reality. Plot, somewhat under-worked out, with a conspiracy twist to cover its holes. Despite it being JD Kirk, I doubt I’ll sign up for the next Hoon, but most probably will stick with Logan, as he has such a good team around him ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 19, 2021 )

I was so looking forward to it but also a wee bit hesitant as love the Logan books so much and really didn’t want to be let down if it wasn’t up to scratch. Have had that experience before when I love a series of books then read a new/different series by the same author and it’s awful. I definitely needn’t have worried. Hoon could easily have, in another writer’s hands, become nothing more than a caricature. Instead, I loved getting to know and understand him more, peeling back some of the layers but still laughing out loud at all of the characteristics and Hoonisms that we all love (or hate!) in the Logan books. Even if you weren’t a fan of Hoon previously, I’d be surprised if you didn’t love this book. Roll on the next one! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 13, 2021 )

He swears and drinks to much insult's anyone within hearing range and beyond, rampages around like a bull on speed, treats his friends or should I say acquaintances like something nasty he stepped in, his one saving grace has to be his total belief in justice and to make those who abuse it regret their actions......one way or another!!
